Launch of Printed Circuit Board and Microelectronics Centre

16th February, 2010

In NIGCOMSAT, we have long recognized that microelectronics is a key enabler in the development of high value technology products; hence the creation of a PCB and Microelectronics center to undertake product development and commercialization of electronics based technology.

The PCB manufacturing facility will help achieve the following:

  • Facilitating collaborative partnerships both within Nigeria and internationally to maximize opportunities for indigenous microelectronics and electronics firms.
  • Assist local microelectronics industries through cluster development, network and facilitating inward investment opportunities.
  • Attracting International investors by offering international microelectronics companies strong skills base with highly qualified engineering, Software and information technology graduates who are in high demand by international corporations.

John’s Hopkins University Research Fellow Delivers Lecture in Nigcomsat

Title: Microelectronics | by Dr. Ndubusi Ekekwe

April 2009
In the opening address given by Engr. Agu Collins Agu, the HOD stated that microelectronics is the study and manufacture of electronics components. He added that we need to encourage the research into microelectronics so that a lot of electronic components would be manufactured in Nigeria. This would not only create more jobs for Nigerians but would also help the country to develop and harness indigenous technology.
The lecture was presented by Dr.Ndubusi Ekekwe a fellow from John’s Hopkins University USA and a holder of two doctorate degrees from USA and four Masters Degrees from Nigeria and US. He stated that Nigeria needs to develop in the area of Microelectronics which will help boost the economy at this time where oil prices are falling. In furtherance, he emphasized the need for Nigeria to follow other countries in developing a knowledge based economy.
The world is now judged on not how much natural resources you have but on the knowledge know how of its people. We can improve on our knowledge based economy by improving our research and development to be world class. Also, by offering International microelectronics companies a strong skills base with highly qualified engineering, software and information technology graduates who are always in demand.

Nigcomsat Partners with Microchip as Certified Regional Training Partner

March 2009

Nigcomsat has recently signed an agreement with Microchip, one of the leading microcontroller manufactures, to conduct training on Microchip products and applications using all courseware developed by or on the behalf of Microchip, including but not limited to, standard course materials that include course identification number, titles, abstracts and contents that have been developed by or on behalf of Microchip, Microchip published documents, promotional materials and other information concerning Microchip products (collectively, “Courseware”) under the terms and agreement of the contract.

This kind of collaboration between a US-based chip manufacturer and a Nigerian satellite company is quite unique in its field and is expected to bridge the gap between practical and theoretical knowledge acquired in the field of electronics. The training centre would soon be opened and would train university students, educators, industrialists and electronics hobbyists.
